Training employees.. Fair and reasonable?

What about if it was I had said i have a lad who really wants to do some training, I am willing to pay for the training if he does it in holiday. Is that fair..?:001_smile:

 

If YOU need him to have the tickets, then its all on you IMO

 

If HE wants to do extra tickets which you don't really require him to have, but are relevant, then sounds very fair of you to pay for the tickets and a good compromise for him to take the time off as holiday :thumbup1:

Its never that simple.. some guys might need to get tickets, some want them. Some might want them and need them. These issues dont happen when there are only 2 of you..

Blimey, I'd be happy for the training.

I had to do no end of crap jobs to get the money for my cs units, I don't think many employers offer cs units and I think they should be greatful for the £700 odd quid it costs.

 

I think if it was a course specific for a job that you had asked them to do of little benefit to them ie water rescue, needle safe etc they should be paid. If they are aspiring arborists with additional cs units they should be jumping at it.

 

Very well put :thumbup: If the lads aren't willing to compromise to get on the course, do they really deserve you paying out for them to gain more qualifications?

Yes a weeks wages is a lot of money to loose but look what they are getting in return.

 

Also if they could do the course locally and not have to use holidays why haven't they?

One rule for everyone, either you pay all the costs and they do it in work time, or they pay all the expenses and do it in their time if it's something they want to do.

On the plus side if they are not jumping on the chance of paid for tickets it's sounds like they would not be enthusiastic enough to start a firm and go in to competition against you so I would pay for there training , sounds like they just want a paid holiday and easy life ! Book the course and pay them and get on with making money afterwords , it's all tax deductible any way.

I would guess that all of you that did the courses at your own cost were subbies or fully self employed? Employees should be trained at the cost of the company. Inc being paid for the time on courses.

 

I fall into the its not right to expect them to do this in their holidays camp.

 

However there might be a third way.

 

Instead of a tie in/pay it back period get them to use the holiday time but for each say 3 or 4 months they stay after the course they get back 1 days holiday allowance. Over the first year they would not loose out by more than one day. Poss even keep it running so that if they stay for 2 years they earn an extra days holiday?

 

At the min I am having a similar issue with my sons employer. His employer needs him to have his B+E licence due to a change in his work.

I teach it & the employer thinks I should do it for free. My son does not want the licence for his own use. He has told his employer that he will do it but that they must pay for it as if I do it for free then I am not doing a paying course for someone else.
