Chainsaw files (brand)??

Just reading old threads on which files to go for, could you 'update' me on which I could / should go for??

 

I see there's (obviously) Stihl And Oregon.

 

But what about these Vallorbe and Oberg brands??

 

Are they any better than Stihl, as that's what we use ATM??

I prefer oregon myself. Not much difference between them, stihl and husqvarna.

 

There was a thread on here a couple of years back where some members did a blind test of files.

RobD did a test which was about as comprehensive as it gets. There's a thread here somewhere.

 

Anyways. Iirc save edge files were apparently the best.

 

I really like my Vallorbe files though.

Rob (of chainsawbars fame) made a "blind" semi-scientific survey, sending out anonymised files to a fair number of professional users, and published the responses.

The top-rated file (and by far my preferred brand) was the SaveEdge files, due to them being more "agressive" and durable.

Most of mine are Oregon I believe, had vallorbe before. I seem to recall being told that vallorbe make oregons files for them?

Oregon and Stihl files have always been made by someone else.

 

I bought some Bahco files recently from the local hardware store and was surprised they lasted as long as they did. I noticed they actually had a mark on them, when I looked closely, they read "Oberg". I hadn't seen Oberg files in 10 years! So was good to see them. Needless to say, I bought as many as I could find form them. Dunno when they will run out and go to another supplier.

 

Save Edge last the longest and are the most aggressive, but they aren't cheap, especially in Europe.

 

I have gotten tired of filing, tho(both effort and the time). I carry a battery powered hand held Oregon sharpener with me now. I only use files to reprofile and for rakers. Saves money in the long run too.

Save Edge for me . Maybe finish off with an Oregon if you want to be fussy .

Pferd (horse) brand are hard to fault, save edge are good but smaller dia they can be quite breakable
