contaminated diesel

We have had this problem lots with our chippers, if there is a cold spell they clog up. We spent loads on winter additives last year and it didn't seem to help, we ran the chippers on white when cold last year as the issue of lost days was very frustrating.

 

Using a different supplier it happened again earlier in the year when we had a cold spell. We have now switched to a more expensive red diesel that is apparently the same as white with a dye in it. I didn't even know that it was different but that is what the fuel place tell us.

I had a generator with a filter exactly the same I have a pic on my phone. I think it's a combination of frosty weather and summer grade fuel. An added problem is it starts to go off after 3 months add a bit of water from the bottom of the tank and you end up with this problem. White or red it all contains 7 % veg oil. I don't think there is a premium red diesel. There is still the dirty old gas oil about but only for use in standby generators and it's not legal to use it in plant or tractors.

I remember reading about two grades of red diesel, depending on the demand at the time, in high demand the refinery would make `red` diesel, a slightly lower grade of fuel allowed under some british/un/eu standard, and in low demand time, road white diesel, just has red dye added (plus anything else needed to make `red`?).

I think there is only one grade of diesel in this country made to standard.

The diesel that caused our customers problem had been purchased in the summer and stored in one of those ibc tanks in the sunlight. Diesel now has solvents to stop the oil separating out and we all know what happens to solvent after a few months. The oil separates out and sinks to the bottom of the tank where it mixes with water once it's been agitated by the lift pump it turns to mayonnaise in the filter.

Might be worth trying B3C mechanic in a bottle to fix , and a B3C tank snake to prevent water in your tank in future , these can be removed , dried and reused multiple times .

That was what I thought but not what our supplier told us.. He could always be lying and just charging us an extra few pence a litre...

 

Or he may be adding an additive at point of delivery that stops waxing etc. I had a kero delivery of heating oil and paid for a premium fuel. The driver tipped an additive in ( could have been magic beans ) but that fuel did seem to last forever.
