Hycrack log splitter problem

Hi chaps.

I was splitting some logs with my Hycrack today and managed to snap the shaft going into the cone! Usually the shear pin breaks but this time it was a thin piece of wood that got between the table and the cone. As it went in I had the feeling it wasn't going to end well and sure enough, it didn't!

The problem is, it's also cracked the bearing, so just a new shaft isn't going to sort the problem. I reckon it could be a write off! Has anyone else experienced this?

Also, if anyone here has one they don't use, how much do you want for it? Think I may need a new one!:001_rolleyes:

The hycrack isn't the most complicated thing

The bearing is an off the shelf part and outside drinking tea, replacing the broken shaft is the simplest job you could ask of an engineer.

Yep . Some times a bit gets under the cone and lifts it putting a strain on things . Never broken a shaft but bent it slightly and knackered a bearing . Just get the number off the race and get one from a bearing supplier . Cheaper than going to Hy Crack and it will be the same part .

Thanks for the replies chaps. I'll look into that. It does seem that this age of machine had quite a narrow table on it, so I'm tempted to use this as an excuse to upgrade to the wide one they do now. I'll weigh up the prices, but it's great to hear that it can be fixed!

Jon - would you be doing it up to sell on or using it yourself if I passed it on to you?
