Fuel Tank-Replace or repair?

Hello

I have a Husquvarna 346xp and whilst out coppicing I made the very bad mistake of nicking the fuel tank with my billhook. It's a 15mm nick but the fuel has started to leak through. A new fuel tank and installing works out close to £160 with my local dealer. Just wondering wether there is a way to repair it or just go for the new fuel tank? It's a second saw so not always in use. Many thanks for your help

I'd repair it, clean it thoroughly and use epoxy and possibly a fibreglass patch, this has been successful with stihl plastic.

 

Stubby on here says the plastic can be melded but I've not tried that

You need a hot air welding gun some parent materiel ( an old tank to cut some filler rod from ) and away you go .

i have fould a soldering iron is best to melt the plastic to manipulate it to make a seal again.

you can even add more plastic to the area by melting cable ties- using them as welding rods.

youll have it as good as new in no time.

empty the tank first though... and leave cap off!!!

Sounds like JB Weld but ten times more expensive.

 

At that price a new tank would be more reliable

I wouldn't buy that non original part to be honest.

If you go for another s/h tank be aware the later 346xp has a fuel purge, the early model did not, so the tanks are different due to a fuel return nipple in the later tank.
