I have the thor mignon recommended by a fellow arborist who has had his for 20 years,  he has recently sold his and bought another they are a work horse. In terms of speed he showed me how to remove the handles with the brake levers to allow it to soley operate on pedal alone (hot wiring ?)this well over doubles the speed of operation as for power there has never been anything it hasnt split and it has seen big wood of all types.

Be great to know how you change to pedal power. Is it easy enough?

Its not that hard, you need to access under the splitter, you will notice  what happens when the pedal is operated and levers pulled. you need to make sure the same happens when just operating the pedal. it involes bolting some sheet metal to the metal pedal mechanism so that it activates the balance switch upon operation also using some threaded bar to trap something into position. I will try and post some pics next time i go to the lock up with someone to help me tip it over. Be aware that It disables the saftey feature of the system leader so get hands well out the way but for me a different splitter without the arms and leavers, so quick!

If you are a one man band and employ nobody, then no.

I was under the impression even if your a one man band working for financial gain (registered self employed)you are governed by puwer even if your working from home. But what do I know?. I do know one thing- a clown who sells firewood in my area (on the side for cash)modded his splitter and took the end of his finger?. He probably is now part of the statistics for tree/ forestry accidents for 2019/2020 and it all helps support the HSE introducing additional requirements on us such as two ropes when climbing?.

He would have simply gone to hospital , been treated, and recovered.

If you have employees, and one of them gets injured, they can claim off you, and you have to legally inform health and safety. They investigate and will always find fault with the employer.

If you are working for yourself, you have no one to blame  but yourself, you cannot claim of anyone, wont get sick or Injury pay, so why would health and safety be interested?
