That's interesting, do you not use a filing guide?

I am confident that I can maintain the correct angles filing freehand but I've always used a guide to maintain the correct gullet height.

Little tip that may have already been mentioned…

If you rub engineers chalk on your file and then tap it leaving what sticks in the grooves , you should find the file will self clear and not block up so much.

 

Not of that much use on ferrous work like saw chains where you don't tend to get too much "pinning" but particularly useful on non ferrous that tends to clog the file

On this subject are there any idiot proof filling gadgets?

I have a set of round file, flat file the guide thing and the depth gauge thing. But I'm rubbish at using them.

I'm only a very casual user. The saw comes out twice a month at most.

Have found it useful on saw chains that tend to have some oil and crud on them …and in general it seems to help regardless of the material being worked on.

Trying to sharpen this chain. ( Picco Micro 3 (PM3), 1/4" P 1.1 mm )

Everything so tiny, the file is 3.2 mm

They're not easy, and theres more of them than normal. They seem to take forever!
