Labour shortages

Is there any business sector out there that is not needing more skilled workers? How can we still have unemployment in the UK? It's got to be difficult to argue that the work isn't out there for the willing, or is all this news a flawed picture??

The UK’s shortage of homecare workers could increase to over 20,000 by the end of the decade if current trends continue, new research shows.

Sounds like the perfect justification for some skilled immigration :laugh1:

I would not draw any conclusions from that list (with the exception of the nurses) until all figures were checked and cross referenced with industry sources or trade bodies directly. The media lie one way or another to suit their agenda at any moment in time.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said "willing"

Youth today seems to want it all on a plate without having to do any graft and there's the reputed 'benefit street' mentality that says why work when I can get for doing nothing - and the handing down of these values.

Some of it, however, could also be down to what's happened in the industry / sector. I wouldn't go into teaching now because of what successive governments have done to it. Its too controlled and measured and restrictive.

Maybe construction is only looking for self employed or subby work and people want security? Possibly it's too short term - a shortage now while there are some mad builds going in and then they'll all get sacked off

It annoys me when people moan that all the jobs are being taken by foreigners when the job shortage is so obvious yet no home grown workers are willing to go out and do the jobs.

You know the answer to your question Kevin. The problem is we don't want to share are Marbles fairly.

So, we, the tax payers subsidise big business.

Simple ain't it?

I'm not so sure Eggs, was listening to a chap on the wireless from Road Transport Hauliers association or some such like, he was saying about the salaries for drivers... Quite impressive I thought (can't remember the precise detail.) Apparently, the main snag is recruiting young drivers when insurance is so high until 25+ so missing the post school / college types who are already embarked on another career path by age 25.

Similar for chefs (in Cornwall) - really short so salaries are climbing. Businesses just can't get staff.

Seems a bit mad to me.

It was listening to a hospitality recruitment consultant and (separately) a RHA rep on t'wireless that got me thinking to look at a couple of other trades - simple google search - there's a fairly comprehensive left to right of media sweep which (tin hat excepted) appears to indicate the reality of the situation.

Left wing trash from left wing sources..

A bit from Telegraph, a bit from Guardian, there's loads from Daily Mail but avoided that. It's not really left wing biased, or are you just baiting me since the "kids science" thing? Anyhooooooo, I thought I was in your bad books??

An exercise in damage limitation....

The underlying message, immigrants are good for you....

I'd rather see the funds allocated to immigration (under the false pretence that the economy or the NHS actually needs immigration) allocated to effective training / upskilling to fill the shortage categories.

I drive a lorry for an agency quite regularly and they always seem to want people , but not sure about the shortage of drivers otherwise there would be loads of lorries parked up doing nothing ( and I do not mean in laybys ) The agency tells me jokingly that there is always drivers off on holiday , having a gastric band fitted , heart problems or having a sex change , and there is much truth in that as well !!!! It is a long hours job 50+ pw and often early starts which not every one wants ..I would imagine most other industries are the same , I would not want to work in a nursing home , and like with most jobs, experience is required and you often have to pay for your own training etc ( HGV licence and also the rather stupid CPC )..

Ah, I see.

I thought you were asking for feedback on what you posted, I did not realise you expected us to do our own google research to answer your question. If you had already done that research yourself then why ask the question?

The left/right thing is really not relevant, is it? You asked a question regarding your media postings. Don't know where the "tin hat" thing comes in but what ever floats your boat...
