Companies holding card details

What's the position on a company holding all my card details on file?

Today's scenario, called to pay a bill and gave the details for my business credit card to pay the £600 bill, 10 min later I get a call back to say the payment failed as she'd written the details down wrong but not to worry she'd used my other card details to take the payment.......

Didnt dawn on me at the time but it's nearly a year since the last time I had to pay them anything and gave the normal card details but they still had everything on file Inc security number on back. Is this legal??

I had an email yesterday from a certain domain names company saying your names are due for annual renewal in November we will be taking payment from card number xxxx

And I thought the same as everybody else they shouldn't be holding card details from 12mths ago

Loads of outfits keep your card info for on going payments- car insrance, house insurance, paypal. I dont think keeping the details would be illegal or there wouldnt be so many outfits holding onto them??

If you are worried about it, I'm sure you could ask them to delete the details once payment has been taken although for the likes of paypal you couldnt use the service if they deleted your details!!

I had the same problem and took issue with the company and the credit card company. The company lied and claimed I gave my permission and the card company gave me a rollocking via letter telling me not to give my permission in future, when I had done no such thing.

Basically its not allowed unless you give permission but companies are doing it left right and centre, by just assuming permission. The card companies know this but do nothing unless you kick up a fuss but they will still blame you:thumbdown:

I suspect the only way to avoid it is to make a statement on every written communication with them "I do not give permission...etc.etc."
