did you find any eaten nut cases around if so have a look and see how they have been opened, i looked at a load yesterday that someone was complaining the squirrels had been eating, turned out it was woodmice!

squirrels cut the nuts open very roughly and in no particular shape or form, mice will open them carefully with the bottom of the nut carefully nibbled round if you look you should see teeth marks very finely if its mice, coarsely for squirrels

I have three nuts on my contorted hazel in the garden, if the squirrel next door ventures from the spruce plantation its going to need some serious protection :sneaky2:

To distinguish the work of a McShifty from field mice or squirells, the McShifty will typical open them by smashing against his own forehead, before washing down said nuts with a generous swig of Guinness.

Look for abandoned nesting sites of the McShifty in the vicinity of the stolen nuts, a patch of flattened grass, and often small patches of chain oil on the ground from the creature's leaky chainsaws.

One final note of caution, a wild McShifty should never be approached before 10am, or his second large coffee of the day, whichever comes first. He is likely to become enraged, and may even (over)charge.
