Listening to someone in distress about the fact that their massive old beech/elm/oak has just come down in their beautiful garden. There is no access for big machinery and how on earth are they going to remove it without making a great mess.

Along comes Billhook with the mighty Lucas saw. Lays down planks and tarp to protect the lawn and catch the sawdust.

Watching their cynical expressions as the wappy looking saw is set up, wondering how such an apparently

unsturdy thing can deal with such a huge tree.

Seeing the change of attitude when the job is done and Billhook has been lucky enough to have no problems.

When it has gone well I never have a problem with payment.

My car stinking of Douglas sap at the end of a day doing forestry, being so in touch with the seasons, the privilege it is to climb and interact with such an immense force of nature, the communication with the tree as you navigate a challenging climb, the views, talking b****cks at lunch time, being treated like a celebrity by the general public, being treated like a member of the royal family by generous clients, that rockstar feeling you get at the end of a really good day, sitting at my computer studying the science of trees with a cup of tea at the end of the day... Lot's I like about this job really!

Great post. Thanks for taking the time to express your thoughts. It's fun to read the words of a man who so loves his work.

I logged in today just to write this post in response. I hope to read a lot of what you might have to say on this forum in the future. Take care.

I suppose using a really big saw in big timber at its absolute optimum , back in the day an 090 with 4 ft bar and the chain like a lance , so much sawdust you have to clear it to get to the bottom .

Either that or on the opposite extreme , snedding with a perfectly sized saw like a 346 or 357 .

I suppose using the right tool running at its absolut optimum
