Disposal of woodchips

We have used a company called Amenity & Horticultural Services Ltd. when we are overwhelmed with woodchip. They send an artic lorry, which we load, that takes about 25 tonnes. They pay a pittance at $4 a tonne. I am certain they make more out of it but I could not get them any higher than $4.

(Need about a 14' reach to load) Contact was Charlie on 01797 252 728.

I can no longer dump woodchips at a small piece of ground I rented (as I apparently need a Waste Transfer Station License)

I am now paying an average of £70 per ton to get rid of them at various Waste Transfer Sites which I think is crimminal.

I have approached a local council who can do nothing as the Transfer Stations are Privately run.

What do you do with yours?

I know what the Pikies do with theirs........and I'm sorta wondering if I really blame them.

I bought a 1 acre field to store my woodchip/logs and have the occassional bonfire. Cost 10 grand 5 years ago but I rent most of it out to someone with a pony for £50 per month so it's paying for itself - plus it's probably worth about 20 grand now!

As for the woodchip pile, you would be amazed how quickly it decomposes. It must lose half its volume in 12 months. Plus you can always sell a few loads, I get about £60 for 5 cubes.

OK. This is an old thread but let's see if we can revive it a little.

I have a business idea I am working on based on a model in the States that is doing well. If it all works out then I think I can help you guys shift a lot of wood chips in cities and the country in a year or so.

I will be looking for people with a professional attitude who will deliver what is asked for and no more and not fly-by-night dumpers with no respect for the people wanting their waste. We shall be maintaining and publishing a list of black booked dodgy scammers so please, don't do it. (Not saying you would but just in case) Also, the chips needed must be from a whole tree and not just a ton of pine needles and should contain NO whole branches. The wood MUST be chipped.

At the moment I need around 266.5 cubic inches of wood chips so if anyone has any to deliver in the Downham area of Kent (Nr Bromley) please let me know. I have to cover an area 40 ft by 20 ft in four inches of chips. I will need more next year also. This is for a proof of concept plot at my own home. What I do NOT want is two tons more than I need dumped on me. If you can deliver the agreed amount then that's great. I will add your name to the list of reliable suppliers who can furnish my area in future.

If this idea succeeds and takes off the way it has in the States then a growing list of outlets for you guys around the country is inevitable. So what do you say? Will you help me to help you?

I am not interested in paying by the bag for this stuff so only contact me if you are willing to deliver for free. Later, if you want to try and negotiate prices with others that is up to you, though I think those who are willing to deliver for free will get the most attention. Obviously. We are simply providing an outlet for your waste that will save you money in the long run.

Let me know guys. Contact me at this email address: george (dot) rolph (at) gmail (dot) com.

266 cubic inches wont go far:001_tt2: based on your measurments you need 12mx6m x.100=7.2 cubic metres of chipat 100mm thick

Even with the higher value it would only take the average tree surgeon around three days to fill that space. What happens then?

I guess you're drying it out to make into compressed chip blocks for firewood? I must say it looks cost efficient if you have inside space to dry it. The blocks cost as much or more than firewood, so if you can get the chip free you only have the processing cost as overhead.

OK. I cannot go into commercially sensitive details concerning the nature of the business at this stage. What I can tell you is this: Every customer buying into the scheme will require an initial load of wood chips for their garden. Then, every year they will require more and this will go on and on year by year. Some customers will be buying land or using the land they have already for the idea. This may be a lot of land or a small plot depending upon how far they wish to go. Most will be home plots though, at least, to start with.

It is envisaged that some will become wholesale buyers of wood chips and then resell them to our customers later, thus establishing another branch of their business. Each customer, large or small will be setting up their own business but not as a franchise, purely on their own account. Each of these small businesses will trade with the others on many levels.

Because economic times are tough and there is not much money around, it is vital that the people entering this scheme keep their costs down. Hence the need for free delivery of their initial loads of chips. Once they start earning they will need less in the way of wood chips and can start buying from you guys, the smaller amounts they need and by the bag.

There are many strands to this idea, including the concept of a new way of managing land to cut down on fertilisers and weed control chemicals so it is very eco friendly. As I have said, this is based upon techniques which have been proven to work in the States and later, when I can release more information, I will make this information generally available. First though, I personally have to prove the concept so that I can show people how it works with a real world demonstration. I will be using the small plot I have as my garden at home to do that. Customers will be able to visit and see the scheme in action rather than just read about it. Once they do, they will know it is not a scam of any kind and they can do the same thing themselves.

It would seem to me that it is all of our interests to help them do this because it will create a market for all of us. Now, if you are able to shift all you create by selling it by the load or by the bag, then clearly this is not for you. However, if you are too busy, lack the resources, or cannot shift enough of the wood waste you make, then this becomes a viable option for you, it would seem. It maybe that I have misjudged the situation you guys are in and if so, please do put me straight and I will rethink it.

If you want to help then please contact me and if you have any questions that I an answer without giving away the whole plan, then I will be happy to try and answer them.
