Because without change democracy can't function effectively - you'd exclude a sizeable minority from representation, thats not healthy

Not sure I understand where you're coming from. There's nothing un-democratic about a party winning 20 elections in a row. As long as the elections are fair and open to everyone.

I don't think that you can possibly maintain a healthy, functioning, democracy,in practice, without debate, change etc. If a party won 20 elections in a row democracy would have changed into something else don't you think?

Isn't that what the British electorate chose when y'all voted against proportional representation?

The proposed proportional representation wasn't proportional representation. If it was a true proportional representation more may have voted for the change. Whoever I choose to vote for will not get in unless it is dressed in a red tie spouting about socialist politics which are no longer socialist but for there own personal gratification. Liabour will most certainly have 3 MPs from the Wigan area but my vote is not going there. When it was the party of the working man it was fine but now they are the party of the non working benefit society hell bent on spending the country to oblivion.

I voted for it

Which means just over two other people didn't. (Perhaps just two fatties) as the referendum was a resounding No with a more than ⅔ majority.

Perhaps the two parties that benefit most from the current system also have the most effective publishing/influencing/spin machines....

I was truly baffled when that result came through as I cannot see how the current system is in any way fairer?

UKIP's value is in upsetting the complacency of the mainstream parties but I would be deeply concerned if they got their hands on any real power as they seem to lack any actual defined policies. They have successfully tapped into people's concerns about immigration, fuelled by the media. I have a problem with immigrants entering the UK with the intent of taking more then they give in return. I have just as much of a problem with homegrown wasters who have no intention of working to support themselves when they are happy to take from those of us who do. I don't have the answers to people already in the UK but the immigration problem can be solved by adopting the stance taken by Australia (I think it was Tony Rudd but not 100% on that) which was to say if you want to come to Australia to integrate and contribute, you will be welcomed, but if you want to come for other reasons you should stay away. I am fully aware that this country could not function without immigrant labour. I have no idea as to how I will vote but I am leaning towards the status quo as they don't seem to be doing too bad a job on the economy. No politician will ever do everything that you want but you need more to vote for the one whose policies damage your interests the least. :001_rolleyes:

I'm in the same, but opposite, position Detritus. In my part of the world it'll be a twit in a blue tie. Trying to figure out how to make my vote 'count' is a tough job. We desperately need a system that can represent the views of people in the position that we find ourselves in, otherwise its pointless. I also strongly object to the idea of 'safe' seats. Here the official 'opposition' have simply given up, they're nowhere to be seen, theres no challenge, no debate, no representation.

Not necessarily. Winning 20 elections would just mean that no opposition party was offering anything better. There will always be debate and change, although I would argue that changing for changing's sake is not always a good idea.

I am not suggesting changing the political system in any way, just hypothesizing that if a 20 term stint did occur, it would suggest a relatively stable society a content electorate.
