It's very simple. Go to HMRC and register as SE. Then you need a government gateway code for your self assessment, which takes 7-10 days. Also you can sign up for their letters by email which is very new, within the last couple of weeks. Which saves you from getting the nasty brown envelopes through the door

Easy way is to get a good accountant and they will take care of everything and make sure you don't get any fines or problems ,mine found £4000 of things I wasn't claiming for straight away eg home office, use of wife's car to quote(even though I use my van) and more,he's worth every penny ,around £350 a year

It's worth considering joining the Federation Of Small Business (fsb) as they will help you and fight your corner if the tax man comes sniffing about your last 7 years worth of books! They are only about £100 for the year and offer a large amount of services and advice (including legal).

The tax man doesnt sniff about, they contact you if there are any irregularities with you books. I had an investigation 3 years ago, i was a nervous wreck for months thinking i had done something wrong. The meeting was 2 hours long, we had been given a list of the queries and the whole experience was a pleasant conversation, out of the 10 queries 1 my accountant had missed, i paid around £700 and that was it. My accoutant handled everything and it cost me £200 fo his time.

Just had 5 months of runaround by the tax man in my accounts after I started up.

Tried to prevent me claiming for training even though I had qualified the year before and was "updating skills". Nptc certificates scanned in and emailed put the kybosh on that one.

So after 5 months hassle I have to pay £80. Why? Because they don't believe the iPad I bought is solely for business use!

Having a good accountant helped immensely.

Hi Everyone,

Another thread on the self employed stuff. Reason being I'm struggling to find some of the other threads that have passed so any links to those would be great.

Main questions are:

  • how do I register?
  • what insurances do I need as I will be subbing myself to other companies etc?
  • is it worth getting an acountant? or are books fairly easy to keep yourself?
  • can I claim back VAT on things purchased for work i.e. fuel, travel expences, new chains/ gear etc?
  • any useful hints & tips?

Thanks alot for help that comes in guys :001_smile:

Hey Jack, you might want to ask them if they have employers' liability covering you. If they have you might not have to get any!

But as the guys said, public liability will cover you if you cause any damage or injury etc. On here Public liability insurance - Compare quotes | Simply Business you can look at different quotes next to eachother
