That must be most nights then as every tree surgeon has a ploom of smoke coming from there yard.

Even the council tree team are guilty of it.

IME, its all down to complains, the EA and Environmental Health tend to be reactive, rather than proactive, if no one complains your fine, but if they do you are screwed.

Thanks for the input guys. I did not think I was doing anything particuly bad as alot of fencing/landscapers/builders yards around my way have fires and somtimes with awful black smoke. I allways thought burning cuttings was c02 netrul forest fires happend way before man invented fire and the planet ways fine before that happend. I allways try to burn hot and dry fires to reduce smoke it is more challenging this time of year. Also my nearest composting site is around 10-15 miles away. The diesel burnt travelling there would be more harmful than burning a leaf and a twig. Allso the composting site uses a machine to chip the waste this would burn more diesel. The ash whats left I use as potash.

The legislation is not sensible, but unfortunately it has the force of the law behind it, so if one of your neighbours wants to make trouble for you, you really don't have a leg to stand on.

Sad, but true.
