Zigzag or Lockjack?

Newbie question, on this subject...

 

If you are climbing with any of these mechanical devices, what do you do before you have a top anchor point? Because you can't climb off both ends of the rope? Am I correct?

 

So are they only suitable if you are using an accurate throw line every time? Rather than climbing both ends with prusiks?

you can still climb on both ends of rope if you want. Zig zag (or any other mechanical ascnder) on one end, prussik on the other. Or two ropes with a zig zag (oaoma) on each rope. Most use a lanyard as second rope but do whatever your comfortable with.

Interesting.. I use an 11.7 yale hedera which I understand is the same as blue tongue just a different colour

New zigzag today for the first time. Rain, 12mm rope. I really enjoyed using it. So far so good. It's a pity it can't be taken on and off mid rope. Can see how it could be stressed inappropriately if not used with some care. Built in swivel is great.

It IS a great device and good to hear your positive feedback...The rain doesn't effect it at all....you will be able to fine tune your technique everytime you use it...it's very touch sensitive especially when friction is reduced....

This is actually a falt in the design as now you have 1 less excuse not to climb in the rain unlike my old hitchclimber which was a mare when everything got sopping wet sticking or slipping so was a good excuse to try and stay out the rain.

 

Paul, remember that day in layburn, couldn't get any more raind on and soked without swimming in the river and the zz never slipped once, excellent piece of gear!
