How to sharpen gaffs?

so assuming thats correct which it probably is. how have i affected things by sharpening the outsides? if i dont do that anymore and just sharpen the insides will i get them to how they should be again?

 

i wouldnt worry about it steve , i dont think filing the outside will make any differance tickle the in side then try em

yeah i was doing he ouside before and it was taking long time to do sharpen them.

 

I think if i take my spikes off instead of walking on site with them would prob help though.

thats the nice things about the gecko spikes, the spike sits high enough on the shank that you can walk on site without the spike hitting the ground

The reason for not filing the outsides is to prevent them from getting too narrow and possibly breaking. If you've only done them a few times then this wont be an issue.

Thats the same as my bashlin alloys, I've noticed on our other set they ar much nearer the ground and hence blunt quickly.

Just sharpen the inside and rub off the burr from the outer sides that will do, but keep the angle correct or you could either stick in too tight or slip a lot!

My Kleins stick around 1/2 an inch in the ground while stood up straight.

My Bashlins came with some sort of 'profiler' (which is now lost) as seen in the kit that Jonesie has pictures; but as stated before, get your edge back by filing the inside face, then take off burrs from the outside edges.....works for me.

As others have said, the paper work that comes with the bashlins says to file the inside edge only.

 

I always assumed it is to make sure the point is always kept on the very out side edge of the gaff. It would be possible to end up with a sort of shoulder on the point that could mean they don't dig in just as well if your knee is to near the stem.

 

But like you Steve, I have always done all three sides, just requires a little commonsense, IMO.

Whatever you do, DON'T sharpen the spine. You'll be kicking out every time.
