Always cutters first then rakers after.

 

I never use any file guides either, learnt to sharpen without them and found that once half the chain has been used up the guide doesnt let you go deep enough to get the required hook for the hot knife and butter effect.! :001_cool:

I think he means put the spark plug spanner over the cutter, so it's inside the tube bit, to protect it whilst you file the raker ??

 

Might as well use a depth guage then if you're using something to protect cutters anyway:sneaky2:

Ive found that it is alot harder to take the rakers down with a flat file on chains such as carlton. The file seems to slide over them rather then grind them down. No such thing with the stihl chain. Dont no if anyone else has found this?

Cutters first then the rakers. Thats a good point about the guides when the chain is half used they dont give the right hook. It would be a good poll how many use guides and who dont. I sometimes do sometimes dont :001_smile:
