How to go about getting a prototype made?

I was wondering if anyone knew or could point me in the direction to go about getting a prototype piece of hardware made up?. Obviously for in the tree, It's idea is from a friend/ climber at work and could be a great bit of gear especially when cold/ wet but not wanting to give much away at the moment. The problem is it's not something that could be knocked together in the workshop and would need more specialist machinery. Would this mean a trip with the design to a Petzl/ DMM factory?

Any info on who to contact or where to go from here is much appreciated

Cheers guys & girls

Mite be best for you to make up some drawings and a proof of concept out of an easy to work material wood plastic nuts and bolts ect. where moast concepts ideas start . Then if it looks promesing . Chuck some money at it find an engineer that deals with the material you want the finished product . And then protect your product .

If it's a real good idea, I would think the last place you would go would be is Dmm or petzl if they thought it was any good they would tell you it's crap and then make it themselves.

Is this something you want to make for yourself or put into production.

If production you need to get it protected every thing these days gets ripped off.

If for you self tou need to get a cad drawing done and get it to an engineer.

from experience, getting a patent is a very long and costly process....dont bother...let someone else do the donkey work!

contact various manufacturers in the trade ( do your research) and send them an outline detail of your idea. if they are interested they will follow this up, if not they will decline. its highly unlikely they will "rip off your idea".

there is a format of letter to send to manufacturers that will protect your idea, no doubt u can download one from the web...the name of the letter escapes me right now but i will check back and post the details.

good luck and be patient. my idea took 4 years to get a patent and about 6 to get to its current stage which is close to production (and about £1million R&D costs, way out of my budget obviously!)

Thanks for the feedback guys, had quite a promising PM so now looking into it further. It would most likely be something that went into production as it would be a handy and versatile thing for most climbers we think . . If not we'll just get some made for ourselves haha.

Jeez Gary! you sound like a very patient man, wondering what you came up with spending that much, sounds cool when its released :001_smile:
