I'm looking a buying a second hand 4x4. I have had 4 3.1 Isuzu troopers that have been perfect but now due for an upgrade. The 3lt Isuzu don't seem to have a good reputation so was looking at a Nissan x-trail or shogun (no landrovers). Anyone have experience of either or would suggest anything else. I do like to have a backup truck for when/if my van breaks down, towing jobs, and occasionally for jobs where my van won't go. Any advice greatly appreciated

ignore the reputation and get yourself a 3litre trooper, just try and find one with lots of service history and that's had the required recalls done. then change the oil every 6k max, one of my customers has had half a dozen 3 litres with no problems, the last 1 had 180k on it when he sold it and we still see it about from time to time 3 years after he sold it. I think that they are the best value 4x4 going, and I am a landrover man through and through!

I used to have a swb shogun. The worst days work I ever did was selling it.

Do find myself having a bit of a hankering for a Nissan Pathfinder for family/occasional work use though. Having said that, I will always own a Defender.

+1 for the 3.0 litre Trooper here. I have a Commercial as a work wagon which has a full service history and the necessary recalls done (injector seals and injector loom). Plated for 3.3 tonnes and comfortable. Plenty of them about if you need spares too. :thumbup1:
