How would a tunnel work to raise the level of a boat to the next section ? If you tunneled level for the length of a canal section you would still have to lift the boat at the end of the section. Easier to have a few small rises instead of one great big one like the Falkirk Wheel. Anybody got any wood ?

You’re right but the canal doesn’t go up and over a hill here ( I think) it drops from the high ground at Devises down to low ground towards Bristol, the canal could have gone through Marlborough which would have been a more sensible route but from what I remember on the information boards, the engineer who built it wanted to pass through devises.

I thought it was more to do with the amount of water available? Emptying/filling locks uses a huge amount of water. Isn't that why the back pumps were installed at Foxhangers?

There is about 50 ton festering in the corner of the yard if you fancy rashering off a bit.

 

 

Strange you lot rattling on about canals, my lads are just fitting one of these fancy shithouse purification units with its own discharge pump. Canal boat discharges into it which is down a bank, gizmos inside do their thing and it pumps clean water uphill back into the canal.

 

I was a bit worried the bank would leech water into this hole but all was well.

 

 

 

Got talking to the owner and she was saying they have restricted boat movements between the locks in an attempt to conserve water.

e6G,  spec was gadget was to be on a six inch concrete base, half filled with water and then backfilled with pea shingle. That hole was over 4.5 mts deep and shittank  position was critical so before the lads launched 20 ton of shingle around it I got them to rest the bucket of the machine on it to keep it steady.They have got a few more of these to do so will get some snaps.
