A good climber will also be a quick climber.

They will also know how to make the job completed quicker not just by flying around the tree but knowing the best most efficient way to do it with the equipment they have at hand.

I'm not too sure on the question though really, since a good climber will be a good tree worker, a fast climber may not.

i have seen guys that can climb quickly and work to a high standard , i have also seen guys climb slowly and make a right mess of a tree , i think a climber needs to work at his/ her pace without rushing but most of all the climber needs to work as part of a team with the ground staff . but this is only my oppinion

what gets me are the feally fast climbers that fush everything , make a mess and leave the tree in worse condition than when they started but they still feel that they are tha mutts nuts ,

if they work with the basics but get the same result then thats just as good.

i'd say that makes him the better tree worker as he has to think about what he is going to do next and what the consequences are of each move. just my opinion but then i'm just a groundie with aspirations really:001_tongue:.

Depends what he/she is employed to do surely? If a good climber is employed/subbed in to carry out tricky or big climbing operations, then yes, they are a good tree worker in that instance.

If the climber is good at climbing but is also expected (as is mostly the case I think!) to then give a hand on the ground where necessary, carry out maintenance on equipment etc but is crap at all that, then no, they are not a good overall tree worker.

'Tree worker' is a pretty broad term I guess. I think ideally a good tree worker is:

- quick and efficient both in the tree and on the ground

- a logical person that can solve problems

- a practical person that can carry out maintenance on a range of machinery

- a good communicator with the rest of the team and the wider public

- and of course has a good working knowledge of trees and their health.....

I dont really have the self confidence to say- I am not sure that i am particularly quick, as I only started climbing a few years back, but i reckon that i can judge quite well what a tree 'needs' as it were. I used to employ guys to climb before i learnt, and I have had one guy who hardly needed explaining to at all, and another who just seemed to be confused. Both were, I think, fast up and in the tree, but only one I would have said was a good arborist. When he left the tree it looked as if it had hardly been touched, albeit smaller. To me this says good arborist- tidy, safe and no butchery. The fact that he is a fast climber is a bonus. So i voted no.
