Gearbox lubrication/grease

Just been out to try & get some grease nipples, but no where seems to have any the right size, any idea what size/make/thread to get ?

Apparently it's a sealed head. Been meaning to pull mine apart to stick some more in. Stupid design.

I use a syringe to get the grease in, if it's a sealed head I wonder where the grease I am putting in is going.

Thanks biggerlogs, for the suggestion, I to will buy an assortment of grease nipples and then fit the appropriate 1, I have purchased a couple of new tubes of lithium grease, problem should now be solved.

I've adapted all our stihl hedge cutter grease plugs to have grease nipples fitted in the plug

but does anyone actually know what size the grease hole plug is

i.e. diameter & pitch

I'm about to make an adapter, I'll measure the plug when I do.

if you have the plug already drill a 5mm hole in it tap it to 6mm and fit a grease nipple

 

How would you then remove the plug at a later date if needed? as you will have drilled out the torque hole. Would it not be easier to simply drill a hole in the alloy gearbox itself and fit the nipple there?? much easier to drill than the steel plug.

Putting a grease nipple in place of a plug is fair enough, but be very careful not to over grease.

 

A brushcutter gearbox has sealed bearings and the seals will pop out very easily under gun pressure. They do not need greasing often.

 

Some of the newer Stihl's do not have a grease point at all, as has been mentioned.

 

But a nipple in the bottom of a hedgecutter will not last long against the floor.

13mm socket or spanner does the job, plus with a nipple no need to remove the plug anyway
