I understand a resurgence in small High Street shops is predicted due to the large supermarkets not being able to compete with the likes of Lidl and Aldi. I welcome this wholeheartedly. It will be good to see a proper greengrocer, fishmonger, baker etc. breathing life back into my local high street. I no longer visit our high street as it is full of betting shops, estate agents, fast food outlets and cheap stuff that I neither need or want.

Trouble is the high street died because no one used it... The culprits for the high street demise is us......

Not all of us! All our meat, fruit and veg, cheese comes from the local Market, bread comes from the local bakers. I'm not saying we don't use the supermarkets but we do try to avoid them.

So it's down to you is it? I wondered who was to blame.

Personally I use to use high street shops all the time until they closed. But then my father had a delicatessen when I was growing up and perhaps I was spoiled with quality over quantity.

Tesco hasnt lost any money. Its all a paper exercise to minimise any taxation due to the Exchequer. Smoke and mirrors, all of it. They have extremely good accountants with the backup of the best brains available to help them pay the least amount of tax possible, as do Amazon, Starbucks et al.
