Where does light become heavy? When does dynamic loading become shock loading? Why would you risk it when rigging ropes are cheap and your life is valuable?

climbing ropes are for climbing, use them for rigging a job and they then become just that, rigging ropes. and if theres no qualified rescue bod on the team, no-one goes up the tree, it just isnt worth the risk, a quick written risk assesment and a method statment, and if he doesnt want to comply....walk away, do not put yourself at risk----for anyone..PERIOD

You are the contract climber. It's your @$$ and your reputation that will ultimately be damaged if something goes wrong. It's sounds like you have presented him with reasonable, alternate ways to safely do the job, and he isn't having it. Time to walk imo

Light rigging is when its that light its almost impossible to shock load your rope. Something that you may normally cut and chuck but there is no where to chuck it or it is to awkward to hold.

You have to retire your climbing line immediately afterwards though. You can't even use it to descend from the tree.

thats funny Mark:D but seriously I've always lowered small cut and chuck sized peices off my climbing line if chuck is not possible..

I think many do mate, but don't get caught, it's like using a 020 on the ground, if you get caught you will be defrocked and will never be allowed to do tree work again

Telephone lines are part of the job sometimes and branch manipulation is just another technique but I agree that cars underneath poses a different problem...
