Came across this and was wondering if perhaps a bird had used this as a holding vice to get the snail out? If so, very clever.:001_smile:

Birds are very smart. I once saw a video of some very large birds in South America carrying large animal bones and dropping them on top of rocky encropments at high altitude in order to crack open the bones for the nutritious bone marrow!.

Saw on the TV, Italy or France I think, in a park a guy threw bread to a crow, the crow took the bread to the pond dropped it in then caught the fish that came to eat the bread! Pretty smart birds.

I was sitting in a pub over looking a rocky foreshore a year or two back with a couple of lasses and gulls were dropping mussels to crack them open. One of the girls thought they were dropping rocks, asked what they were doing, when I explained (obviously not very well) she responded with 'wow, they must be really accurate at dropping those stones'.

And you say birds are clever!!!!

One of the best examples I've seen was on spring watch and it was a sparrow hawk drowning a magpie in a birdbath , bit macabre but was a great instance showing how a bird of prey can't afford a struggle with its prey ...amazing
