thin tyres, live axle, and most important, the skill to drive it off road, any muppet can get stuck, even a 4x4, but with a little skill, off road is easy with 2wd, and for the LR everybody keeps shouting for, seem more stuck than any other vehicle, they dont even come with a diff lock as std

Done some work with another member on here who runs kangoo type vans and seems to be able to get them into some places you just wouldn't think possible.

Does seem momentum is the key, however that does seem to mean things wear out/fall off quicker if his last one was anything to go by :001_smile:

I need to buy a new vehicle, i've had a Hilux for the last 6 years. The only time I drive off the tarmac is at some of the tip sites I use and my yard can get a bit slippy after some heavy rain, I very very rarely actually had to lock the wheels and put the Hilux into 4WD.

I think I could make do without that 4WD option, and surely a 2WD vehicle such as a Transit, Daily, Cabstar, Canter isn't much worse than a Single cab Hilux when its only in 2WD??

If anyone could share their experiences or horror stories that would really help me make my decision!

Cheers, Joe

I noticed our hilux getting worse in 2 wheel drive spinning a wheel even when not towing. I worked out the shoes were dragging. There is a lever on the back plate in the hilux which seizes and ratchets the shoes on but does not allow them to release eventually the shoes just wear out. Worth stripping and maintaining especially if you are not going 4x4 now.

remember once when I worked on an estate getting a call to go recover a fishing parties landcruiser they had tried to drive out to the loch (theres only a walking track :001_rolleyes:) we got them out right enough but as we were doing so a local digger driver drove past in his old mk3 escort van past us past them and out to where he was working and he made it back too landcruiser 0 escort van 1  same guy used to tip it on its side with the digger to work underneath!
