Question

Hi anyone give me a ball park figure of what it would cost to chip a leylandii and Laurel hedge that I've just cut down , to give you an idea of size it was about 12 feet high and 10 feet wide total 40 feet long.

I'm in hinckley leicestershire - if anyone's local maybe they could quote for the job - just trying to weigh up if it's cheaper to chip or cart it to the tip in a hired pick up

It will be cheaper to take it to the tip if the tip is free, if you are not from tree surgery background then you will possibly have just cut it down, it will need dressing to go through most chippers and if you ain't stacked it butt first someone will have to fight it to put it in the chipper. Not trying to patronise you if you have got it all nicely dressed. I always charge top doller to chip other peoples stuff like that as it's I salt a PITA. Sorry to be negative. Maybe you should have put a pic up. I doubt anyone would want it for less than £150-200.

Thanks for your reply - yes it stacked like a bears arse! Should have thought about that but of course I didn't.

Would a hire machine cope with it? Anything larger than about 2" I've logged up for my burner, what should I look for in a hire machine.? Brand etc?

Ya you could hire a small 75mm TW it would do the job easy and you can wheel it were you want. But your next problem would be getting rid of the chippings unless you chipping on site? You looking at bout £80 a day hire. Hope that helps you a bit?

Brandon Tool Hire will have a decent (ish) Timberwolf for about £100... But then again you still have to get rid of it! Best to just burn it (if you can)!!

That sounds reasonable, I've got a long garden with an allotment type area at bottom so happy to compost chip there

I charge £80/hour (plus VAT) to chip others' arisings as a filler-in job, but that is with an operator and we don't chip anything undesirable (roots, fences, anything that might have nails in, sweepings etc). I would imagine that your entire hedge would easily be chipped in an hour if it is stacked ready to chip and you can get the machine near it - if not the costs quickly escalate. If you can have a fire I would do so if I were you.
