Don't Rush into judgements like that just because there is unrest in the forest, there is trouble with the trees. For the maples want more sunlight but the oaks ignore their pleas.

 

Plus ca change plus c'est la meme chose.....as someone once said...

I have a love hate relationship with them as they do tend to dominate a wood if left to their own devices. But if we didn't have them and someone suggested a fast growing very adaptable tree that would self seed and mature quickly whilst growing into a stunning mature tree, we'd be planting them left right and centre. We often don't value what is common and too easy. Have to say that as a young tree I prefer Norway Maples though.

Some great trees out there especially your pic treesrus, the best one i have ever seen was one I woke up to every day throughout my childhood, it dominated the parkland that was my view and must have had a spread of around 35metres. Very strangely it was also my fathers favourite too. The year he passed away 10 years ago (far to Young @59) the tree died too within months...........
