Morning,

As an 'interested bystander' what is it about the top handled saws that makes their use so dangerous please.

Thankyou.

The operator. The design of the saw makes it possible to use the saw with one hand. This means that there is less control and in the event of a kickback the chain brake wont operate by the front hand mechanism

I think that ergonomically the relatively shorter distance between the 2 handles compared to a back handle saw , make controlling any upward movement ( kick back for example ) more difficult . The tendency for a person to " hold and cut " exacerbates this therefore they are deemed more dangerous . Have to say I have never had a problem ..touch wood ....

Ah! I getcha!

I had thought it might be that the one-handedness might lead to the loss of an ear when absentmindedly wiping your nose on your sleeve.

Or something:biggrin:

Cheers.

Ouch! Yes, I see. Hold stick, cut stick cut arm!

Hands in front of handle. Quiver:biggrin:

Cheers.

The injuries are presumably upper body is use of the saws on the deck included in stat's? Been hearing this for at least a decade.

Never cut myself with a saw but have gone through to the bone with a Sugoi! Cotton wool jackets should be the solution. Lovely in the summer:001_cool:

The problem with the HSE stats is that they include any chainsaw / tree incident under tree surgery.

This means they include a lot of landscaper types who simply got out of their depth.

The stats aren't a true reflection of the professional industry but that's not the concern of the HSE, they are mandated to protect and if banning the use of top handled saws will do the job then its an option for them.

I think blaming colleges is wrong... I work for one, and at no point do we advocate one handed use of saws nor do we send students into the industry believing they're tree surgeons.. we have to look no further than the industry itself for both.. companies letting my studends climb with top handle without tickets and lets face it I can make a week long montage of arbtalk members you tube vids showing one handed saw use... We need ro start where the biggest influance is... Current climbers as peers show kids the wrong stuff... Rant over, sorry guys, climb safe, work safe!
