Rabbit proofing new hedge?

Hi all,

I've got some tree's and hedges to plant in the next week or so.

Going to get some spirals for the tree's

But the only option i can think of to protect the hedges is to use stakes and run chicken wire all round it and dig it down 6" or so!

Any suggestions?

Don't make the mistake of putting the chicken wire straight down into the ground. bury it about an inch down but with the bottom six inches laid flat under the soil facing the rabbit side. Rabbits are pretty stupid and dig right next to the fence, where they will dig down to meet the wire. Simples!

No need to dig down. Fold the wire out wards at the bottom.

Correct, just as effective as digging it in and easier to remove the wire in future if you wish.

In fact, probably better because if they start digging they can easily go down a foot or more with no trouble. The wire along the ground prevents them from digging at all.

Just be sure you leave no gaps below it!

I've just removed 4k of rabbit fencing.

Even if you just lay the turn out on the ground the grass/veg will bury it in a year or two so don't worry about it being visible. I've also got used rolls of netting approx 50m for £15 each if you're near north notts/s yorks they might be useful.

Any merit in cutting a small slit to poke the front bottom edge of the L into the ground? I presume this would prevent it from lifting & leaving gaps for those pesky wabbits to sneak under.

Also, where is a good place to buy the wabbit pwoof fencing from? Cheers, Steve
