Hiya,

Does anyone on here do soil screening as part of their business? Either supplying screened soil or as a mobile operation? I was just looking at the prices of screened soil and it seems to be quite expensive, just wondering if there are any £`s to be made somewhere!?:thumbup1:

Chap up the road from me seems to do well out of it £200 for a 10 tonne tipper load and he wins some of it from his skip business. He often has a struggle supplying during wet weather as the screen cannot cope.

Depends on your setup.

A big yard is needed, plus getting the dirty soil in from somewhere.

Then what are you going to do with the left overs. Hardcore is easy to move on, but other waste isn't.

Then machinery outlay.

If you can tick the boxes go for it.

We used to screen quite a bit of soil years ago with a fairly large setup.

To do the job properly involves quite a bit of investment, flat deck screens are ok but trommel screens do a much better job especially when its damp but are in a different price league.

Another huge problem is supply of good soil to put over the screen, where are you going to get it from, most muck away firms now have their own screens so you may struggle to get a supply of half decent material, you will get plenty of rubbish though :)

We got out of it when testing started to become a requirement, but as stated above you need to get every so many hundreds of tons tested.

We now buy all our screened in, we do not accept any recycled product in what we buy, far less hassle for us as all the testing is dealt with and apart from the very odd load we get consistent quality.

i worked on a screener for a while on a large site and soil testing was the norm by geotec & job stopped when it was wet etc forever sealing the soil pile up to keep it dry with back of bucket etc and even though the soil looked good a lot of it was either too acidic or too organic not a clue about the latter but just did as i was told lol brand new powerscreen by the way and had a polish chap cleaning the screens non stop when damp

You also need an environment agency permit, and they dont give them out easily. Plus what to do with the crap thats left.

I actually have a pto driven sisis screen thats sitting in my yard doing nothing and its going on ebay as its too big. Ideally id like a supascreen, as they fit through garden gates and you can screen existing soil in a garden prior to turfing. That would make money
