LEZ london

Heres the situation: Letter from VOSA says I am not allowed to take my hilux into the low emission zone in London, if I do its a straight £1000 fine, reason is that they are trying to keep the air in London free of the crap that comes out of my exhaust as it don't have a catalytic converter. Ok fair enough But if I pay £100 per day for a permit I can go in??????????? Does anyone know why £100 would change the situation apart from being another money making scam on the motorist?

Hi

Sounds like a cash cow to me & nothing to do with emissions, you still see plenty of taxis & other vehicles making smoke.

I daresay they would enforce it to the letter if the opportunity arose, our 1995 Landie is probably banned but its French registered - ha!

It's not road tax, and hasn't been road tax since the 1920's.

So thus it don't get spent on roads.

Correct'ish. It's not road tax as you say. It's vehicle excise duty.

Not since 1937 has there been a link between road tax/vehicle excise duty and government(s) spending on public roads.

When are the rules changing again? At the moment 04 plate transits seem ok but what about <7.5 tonne trucks like iveco how recent a model would I need to buy?

If you are running a commercial vehicle including 4x4 light utility vehicles, motorised horseboxes, pick ups & other specialist vehicles weighing between 1.205 tonnes unladen, 3.5 tonnes GVW, motor caravans & ambulances weighing 2.5-3.5 tonnes or mini buses with more than 8 passenger seats meet the current standards for particulate matter if registered as new on or after 1st January 2002.

There are some vehicles registered before this date that meet the current Euro 3 standard & are known as early adopters.

Other heavy commercials more than 3.5 tonnes need to be registered as new before 1 october 2006 to enter the LEZ.

If you find a vehicle you can enter the reg number on the TFL website & will tell you if its compliant.

Hope this helps Openspaceman.

The LEZ punishes small businesses. Big national fleets just allocate their new lorries to London runs and routes the older dirtier lorries elsewhere.

I had to sell a perfectly good hiab lorry and buy a newer one.

The largest polluters are buses, but these are exempt.

We are weak willed compared to the French, they would not put up with this. I am told that when they implemented wheel clamps, they took it upon themselves to super glue any wheel clamp padlock in situ and the authorities gave up.

The cameras are too high to put out of action!

Did you guys have to fit a particulate filter to your tree spade?

Thanks Kenty and now I've read the tfl site that's confirmed. I shan't be looking at the iveco on arbtrader as a result, because it's registered 1/1/6.

What it doesn't say is when the next level of restrictions will apply.

I'm guessing that all >3.5 tonne commercials registered in UK after this date of 1/10/6 are fitted with euro 4 engines. As it has been mentioned that modern trucks meet euro 6 how long will a euro 4 be allowed?

I note that trucks being used by a firm I do work for must be using adblue, simply because the old containers are being used to deliver chipper fuel to the site, a bit worrying with regard to water contamination of fuel if they're not dried out thoroughly.

FORS Bronze Recognition Scheme

Once you've understood LEZ, for over 3.5t vehicles going into the LEZ area you have to get the above.

It is part of the drive to stop cycle / hgv accidents in London.

FORS - TfL contractor and supplier requirements

More regulation  Instead of targeting the suicide jockeys on treaders they want to put more on the plate of the truck drivers. Beggars belief. I cant believe they have not grasped the fact that the cyclists need educating to keep out of the way of a turning truck. I say leave it to Darwin to sort out.
