Bulldog or spear&Jackson websites? H.C Robinsons do Bulldog tools and Cherrys at Frod do S&J I borrow a family heirloom if I ever need one. Probably not used one for 18 years. Will probably have to order in special.

Get hold a decent old hook. The generally available new hooks aren't a patch on old ones. Get a good one and the steel will have a real whistle to it. My old Yorkshire will knock spots off any modern hook.

The new ones as said aren't the same as the old ones, that said I use a newish bulldog as much as a morris I have but that's partly due to having a straight blade on the back of it and the morris being a bit sentimental as it was my grandfathers.

Take a look at Timeless tools. Gilplin or Elwell are the best. I personally would steer clear of new ones having had both I would only get an old one now even if it means replacing the handle.

+1 seen photos and nice old hooks do not buy new ones profile cut unlike old ones which has beenforged with wrought steel and carbon. you can get good hooks made by blacksmiths. but Medip logs bills are nice

Have a word with Mendiplogs he has a couple up for grabs on Arbtrader. The older ones are made of better quality steel and can give a much finer edge when honed and sharpened. I was told that many years ago by a master hedger who never let anyone near his hook. It was razor sharp and kept an edge for many long hours hedging. I managed to get one years later and it is quality, I have a couple of Bulldog hooks but they dull and lose their edge real quick.
