Work experience lads....?

Hello, had a voicemail today from a lad at local college doing an ND looking for work experience.. Could probably use an extra hand plus was in his shoes so know it can be difficult BUT where do I stand insurance wise also paying them or not? Obviously the payment would be down to if he can drive to me in the mornings/is useful and not a liability and what if any tickets are held. Any feedback received I'd be great full. Cheers fellas :thumbup:

I would speak to your insurance Co regarding this.

Regardless if you pay him or not, he will be "working for you". Imagine anyone doing voluntary work, they need to be covered. The insurance co need to know.

 

If you already have your liabilities in place, it's not likely to cost much to add him to the cover.

 

I'd call the insurance and add him. Give him a chance, and if he's any good, pay him. Simples.

I have had collage lads on work experience for about 4 yesrs, I pay them basic money, the collage will do a h+s set up and you will need employers liability. They will look at your kit to make sure its safe etc, nothing to worry about.

Yep IC TREES is spot on. We've got a lad on with us at the moment, pay him £40 a day and he invoices us every week, and he usually meets us on site. He hasn't got any tickets but just drags brash cleans up etc.

We have just taken on a lad straight from college in regards to the insurance all they wanted to know was that we had full employee liability insurance... Not the subbie option.... The college also came to the site to check first aid boxes, safe working practices, ppe etc etc. But cost wise it didn't cost me hardly anything to add him on to the insurance. Hope this helps :)

That's actually quite good.

 

My boy is doing a degree in horticulture but specialising in sports turf. Done 400hrs work experience this summer at a golf course working full time for £90 per 40hr week and he was well pleased with that. Some of the others on his course got squat!
