There was one near me a few years ago, they decided it would take so much water to put it out that it wasn't worth doing, and just let it burn out. Went on for months.

There's been a big wood fire up at Middlesborough which has only just gone out. All the firefighters could do was let it burn itself down and then damp down every so often so there wasn't clouds of smoke everywhere.
