Hi Spud

I'm just wondering if it's worth doing anything to improve the power of a Stihl 029. I have a small saw and a big one for milling with and could do with the middle sized one having more power to get through bigger logs quicker and easier, without forking out on a new saw. I understand it's not a high spec saw, but got it from my old man and free is good!

029s are clam engines and are therefore not the easiest machine to do too much with. Probably a muffler mod would be the simplest way forward on one of these saws unless it is coming apart for another reason.

Been a bit quiet on the forum lately....are we all that jaded after Christmas:001_rolleyes:

 

I have had a MS461 in for porting, strange saw with a lot of contradictions inside it. The transfers are on the front of the cylinder, same as the 560XP. The piston is strangely windowed, strangely as there are no cylinder wall lower transfers as the uppers are fed from the front as previously mentioned.

 

The strangest part is a lump of casting bolted to the crankcase opening that pushes in to the piston cavity when the piston is on it's downward stroke. I am guessing that this acts as both a stuffer increasing transfer volume and also a guide to direct the flow toward the lower transfers. There are also some side cut-outs in the crankcase opening and am thinking that these and the piston windows act to increasing the flow in to the transfers.

 

Anyway - the muffler mod was relatively simple, the inlet and exhaust ports were reshaped as there is little widening you can get away with. Ring ends are also an issue being both forward and rear facing. The flywheel key was modified to give around 5 deg ignition advance!
