it's a thought you know...

 

i was fairly confident of saying white poplar but after you reminded me of the extremities that tulip wood can have it's definitely a possibility...

 

looking at some of the pictures here i wont rule it out...

Def pop, I've worked with this on all levels, as in climbed, felled, milled and sanded and from those picks that's my call

 

Without physically holding it, this is my call also.

Tulip wood is substituted for pop wood in England by guitar makers because of the similarities, I don't think tulip wood for making guitars is from L.tulipafaria tho, I think it's a different sp from the USA

I do not think that the two different coloured zones are "sapwood " and "heartwood " as in oak for example but are zones of wood , the inner being discoloured by decay with the decay not yet reaching the outer wood , protected by the 4 th wall theory ( the tree may become hollow at this point if left) . Without holding , feeling, smelling it I do not think it is worth a guess !!
