Hard to tell from this angle, but looks like Fingus glovellia glauca. Dont worry, they are totally harmless to trees and shrubs in their solitary state, tho if in a pair, can do untold damage in the wrong hands. My advice is to remove and incinerate, never know what nasty pathogens may be lurking within.

Just be carefull it hasn't mated, you can normally tell as there will be abrasion marks on it's underbelly and possibly staining at the end of one of the five tenticles.

If it does show signs of this it must be incinerated at the earliest opportunity

i've heard that these rare creatures are very shy and are lost without their mate... looks like a case of fingus glovellia sucidilica...!!

Andy i thought you had said it was totally armless. A person put the glove around the tree tied rope around back to ash to stop it leaning towards the light. Half the glove and all the rope is covered.

Of course, the other theory is that after mating the male crawls away and dies, simIlar to Sockus domicilica, choosing a small tree or shrub rather than the washing machine to die in. This is why you can only find one of the pair! Fingus is not known to be capable of emotion, so suicide is out of the question
