Makita blower playing up

Not a chainsaw but similar engine: my old makita blower, last used in September, failed to run properly today. It started fine on choke and ran for 10 seconds with choke off but then just died. It wouldn't restart but left for 10 mins and then the same problem, it would tick over for 20 seconds or rev for 10 seconds then die. I thought it was a blocked tank filter but it pumped fuel through using the bulb. I stripped carb and cleaned everything and reassembled to find the same fault recurring. Any ideas what I've missed?

One of those old 4-stroke machines? I must have had mine nigh on 10 years when it got terminal death last year. I never did find out what the (major) problem was but 9/10 years' use for £90... no complaints.

It's a standard 2stroke with a bulb primed carb. Old but looks very similar to current model

Coil or low compression

Your symptons are classic fuel starvation. I would suspect the carb gauze filter, but you say you have cleaned that. Sometimes though, it is difficult to clean a carb without an Ultrasonic bath.

 

I would firstly check the fuel pickup hose for holes or cracks, it could well be sucking air.

 

But come to think of it, you should be able to start it again straight away with fuel starvation,when reprimed, so maybe best to check the spark immediately after it has stopped, as it could be Eddie's coil suggestion.

What I need is something to put the plug in line with to see if the spark dies as it stops.

 

Compression seems fair but no tester to hand

Pull the plug and hold it against the engine (away from the plug hole)

As for compression testers, they're fairly cheap and very useful

done that plus it does run for a few seconds. Bought a spark tester that fits inline today but still suspect a fuel issue.
