Do you pay travel time and sick pay??

The fact that you pay for meals when you and the lads are working away is a nice gesture!

 

The sick pay situation is fine IMO.

 

No way on this earth would I drive to your job or even be a passenger in a van if you weren't paying me.

We start at eight, finish around 4.30. It's rare that we travel much more than an hour, but it's still work time. If it's a big commute we may occasionally start half an hour earlier, but then it's normally made up for by an early finish another day.

 

I don't get paid sick pay. At all. But then again I'm rarely ill. It's amazing what you can work with when you don't get paid to be sick. My previous employer paid sick pay from day one. Most people there had at least two weeks off sick per year!

I pay my guys from when they get to the yard (8) to when they leave (4.30- 6) I also pay them for sick days. Even if there beer sick do you really want them on site?

 

I've worked for some real in the past and determined not to treat my staff the same.

 

If you look after your staff they will look after you.

If they are the type of lads to get wasted on a work night and call in sick the next day do you really want them on your payroll?

one of the guys i know years ago used to phone in sick every day after pay day, trouble was the entire area had heard him coming home on estate so knew the 3am noise was pub home time, got old fast!

 

boss eventually made him sign away a days annual leave every time it happened, soon stopped - guess better than a disciplinary hearing for false sick form.

 

always worked on basis that from moment you arrive at yard to leave yard its paid time. up to boss if he had priced job an hour away or ten mins away.

If an employee has to travel to get to your yard/base of operations, that's their cost. But once there, that's the employer's cost. They are after all taking responsibility for the company's property and maybe in charge of a company vehicle. How could one reasonably say, "I'll pay you for loading the truck with gear for the job and again once you get to the job. But in between is your own time. Be a like instructing someone to go to the post with letters or dealer to collect parts and docking their pay while they're away.

 

Pay someone fairly for a fair job and get the employees you want to keep. Dock their wages every time you've directed them to travel and expect to spend most of your time interviewing for new staff.

I think paying travelling time is only fair, as said already, it's not the lads fault that the job is 3 hours away.

 

Sick pay, people could take advantage on that front, depends how much you trust your lads

Employees should get paid from the minute they are under your instruction. If that instruction is sit on your back side and be driven to a job 3 hours away then so be it. As for evening meals when away I would also pay these (even taking the lads to a trade show). If the employee was at home his evening meal with family may only cost a couple of quid vs. £20+ at the hotel. Why should the employee be out of pocket from an expensive meal and away from family for your ultimate gain without some kind of benefit?

It all depends on what is agreed on before hand.

If they agree to getting paid while only at the job site then fair enough, work can be tight, distances may need travelled to keep a business going.

I'd rather sit in a warm van for a few hours a day for nothing if it kept me in work.

I think the point was that 8:30 is half way through the morning rather than a start time.
