I'm thinking purely from the aspect of not putting off domestic customers. Far from trying rip anybody off. The gross price quoted with no hidden or extra charges.

What I'm trying to get across is that by not having to put 'inc. vat' or 'plus vat' on a quote it can't put off private customers who resent paying vat to tradesmen.

Invoicing is another thing entirely as I'm well aware you have to state vat no. And vat details etc.

Technically they are not paying vat to the tradesman but to HMRC ,we just collect it and pass it on!!

We always state the price +vat that way business who are vat registered know the cost to them and our domestic customers are able to work out the addition of 20%,on you quotation you should have your vat number as well.

At the invoice stage we have a vat breakdown ,being vat registered should not be feared ,with the threshold at 79k most 2 men teams should be aiming at at least that turnover.

Yes exactly, I understand how VAT works, all I wanted to know was whether it was compulsory to mention VAT on a quote or not.

Purely on the basis that im well aware of the dislike the private domestic customer has for VAT!

I didnt make that clear enough in my first post.

In any case, thank you to all who have responded.

Why would you need your VAT number on a quote?????

I'd suspect that for the purpose of clarity its best to show your vat number and a vat breakdown on each invoice. That way there isn't any confusion.

Not sure really I suppose its so they can clarify if you are actually registered or not ,it something that came up at an AA approved contractor inspection years ago because we did not have our vat number on our quotations , we have done for the past 12 years or so.

I try to never do anything for which I can see no valid reason.

The vast majority of my quotes are verbal or email, so no letter head.

Do companies really run someones VAT number by HMRC check its genuine before accepting a quote?????

Probably not, but it would be nice to have the option to do so if anything gave you cause to be suspicious.
