Yard at home?

We've just bought a house and 8 acres. The business has a yard in town, it casts us 6k a year- no power, no sheds but it's central to where we work, hard standing, enough for the gear, chip and a couple of 100 cube of split wood.

 

To me the there are pros and cons, but what benefits have people found of having their yard where they live?

The only benefit I think is that you are on site for security purposes, apart from that I personally think being that close to work has a lot of down sides

There is a similar sort of place for sale close to where we live! It's got the house,yard and a small paddock. It's got an operators license, out buildings and is just off a main road. Ideal for what I would like to do. The only thing that stops me going for it is Mrs Egg.

Thats the bit I miss, I bought this place over thirty years ago and every day is work of some sort or another. I could fill every day working on this place and just as you think your nearly there its time to start on things like fencing that are suddenly ten years old again. I know some people would think they are in heaven owning a farm but few realise how much hard work they are let alone the cost of maintaining them. They become a lifetimes work.

I have always rented an Industrial unit and lived apart from work in Berkshire and now Sussex. However! just moved into a house with yard and 4 outbuildings, in the process of moving everything home. Def good excuse for a sort out of stuff I never use. Mrs Groundie has promissed tea and bacon sandwiches if I am out in the workshop so I guess things might be looking up. Funny my fencing need looking at as well, little job for this weekend.

Just typical of what I was saying is the fact I was out there last night at 12.30 pushing up the fire.

But surly if your yard was miles away, you would have not got home till 1, with the drive??

 

My yard has always been next to my home, I could not imagine have a yard away from home, would be a total PITA, IMO.

I think his point is, if his yard was miles away he wouldn't have been out there at all
