I've always thought that eating a visor might give you that split second extra time to react that could make the difference in those situations. Maybe it saved you worse damage?

 

Things happen too fast to give you a chance to react, the visor might help slow the chain down a bit, but offers no protection per se.

 

To the op, get well soonest, & well done owning up to your error.:thumbup1:

A visor offers very little protection but it does offer some so well worth wearing even when cross cutting. A longer bar is likely to hit the actual helmet rather than the visor this will slow a chain down and could reduce an injury to painfull rather than fatal.

unlucky mate.....but well done for owning up the ammount of people on monday that will think twice before cutting with a saw . so infact you have probably stopped a few people from injuring themselves.....hope it heals soon
