well as groundie employed i own all my own ppe and saws,altho i dont use my own saws they are provided.I paid my own way at college and have tickets to climb work.along side chipper and tractor ticket i still earn less than £10 per hour and commute 40 miles a day in my own car.

 

i get paid every week 5 days a week and the work equipment is in good condition........

That's the hard bit, go it alone and make some money and endure a reasonably stressful existence or be paid less for someone else to have all the stress and business costs...

 

It's a tricky one..I've been both employed and now run three little businesses. (Tree/ground care, logs and kindling, small engine servicing )

 

Extremely stressful building each part of the business but rarely do I work for less than £200pd and often work 7 days. Also the graft of self employment is immense if you want to earn and do well...employment it's someone else's worry really...as long as you do your job..

 

Double edged sword ;)

yes it is,

 

i have the pleasure of 12 years of self employment so am blessed with the nice toys at my employed job now.:thumbup1:

 

if all tree cutters had to be self employed for a min 5 years it would help im sure.

 

the employed population is thin in this country so those that are employed seem to be the ones that know how to work and take just wages.:001_smile:

Very very true! Ha..

 

As he prepares to deliver his last load of logs for the day and watches his new kiln barely make it to 35 degrees! Oh my!

 

Employment looks wonderful on this rather wet cold Sunday night :)

best thing of working for someone else is that you have more time for yourself and family i suppose thats depends of how big is the business:001_smile:

You still haven't said if your employer has put you through all the tickets.

If you paid for them yourself, i would say it's a fairly low wage (both my climber and groundie are both on more than that), if your employer paid for them then I would keep schtum.

There are two sides to this coin Ed, aren't there?

 

I worked for a big company that put me through lots of tickets. They did this so I could do the work they needed doing. I in return did that work to the best of my abilities. So I think these things balance out.

That's true eggs and in big companies they can absorb that into their overall training budget.

The tickets he's mentioned would cost thousands, which for a small employer would be a huge expense but they can't easily pass that on to customers as they are likely competing with many other small firms which probably don't bother with training.

I just know that i'd be a bit miffed if after spending that much on training a second year climber then demanded a pay increase.
