MEWP or Climbing?

i think there is a knack to mewp work. so on your first attempt you may find it slolwer. once you have it dialed i find it less fatiguing

Our H&S officer recently been trying his best to minimise tree climbing if not scrap it.he knows himself its impossible to do that because of cost,time etc...he wants me to use MEWP where ever we can but even though I don't mind using MEWP for some jobs I prefer climbing because I feel like im in control of the situation rather a machine.i feel like ive been pushed into using something im not entirely happy so what you guys think about what I should do and how I should explain it and something else I d like to know.

I cant find much info about it. does anyone know updated accident and fatality rates of MEWP and climbing?

You are looking for an out but as long as the HSE says that part of assessing a task should consider ALL methods, your HSE man is going to want you to consider the use of a mewp wherever its practical.

 

Not comfortable with the mewp? experience is the solution to that, leave the macho climber in the bag with your rope and regard felling the tree as the job rather than climbing the tree as the job.

Sounds like you have been given an golden opportunity to experiment with a different type of work method. Why not gain valuable experience and maybe some extra qualifications.

 

Mewps in my opinion are brilliant for some jobs but you got to use them frequently to find out their advantages and limitations.

Climbing in most situations is far easier for a dismantle in my opinion.

I hate being up in those things, there far more likely to fail than your kit or anchor.

There great for reductions and target limbs/ branches.

I dislike mweps and only use them as a last resort. I think they are taking away a skilled art form in climbing.

Too many have a go heroes use them.

yea they want me to use it but i think at the end of the day its my decision to choose which way would be more practical,quicker and safer so even thought they are trying to make me use it when i can i prefer climbing because in my opinion its safer then mewp.

 

You said it. When you do your site/risk assessment you have the answer.

Use it when its actually needed , otherwise climb away the company i work for has a manual / safe working procedure for climbing which is given to people with clip board who ask questions like " is this safe or the best way to do the job "
