I'm potentially in the market for a new 5 tonne machine and am a bit overwhelmed by choice tbh. I want zero tailswing and will need to be able to use a rotating grab - has anyone got any advice over which manufacturer to look at over and above others? There's a CAT dealer on my doorstep but I haven't seen much talk of there smaller machines in this thread (other than Mr Blair's of course!). Eddie - you don't seem occasionally underwhelmed with new Kubotas somehow compared to their older models - is that something I should worry about? Takeuchi seem good value (which surprised me) - are they an old model now? Does anyone know anything about Case?

Absolutely nothing to worry about in the 5 tonne class Kubota range that's for certain, and the 8 tonne version is simply a marmite case, some love them others not?

 

A U55 in L spec would give you the twin dual acting proportional circuits you require for the grab nicely operated on the levers, and air con.

 

If you don't mind a bit of tail the Kx57-4 in L version is the ultimate pocket rocket, and I'd have no hesitation in buying another.

 

Loads of good kit about now in this size from a range of manufacturers and plenty of deals to be had.

I'd go and see your local dealers and firstly theirs the cost between the big brands but secondly there is their service.

My new local 1 is brilliant, don't try calling their main depot as the phone system is useless but the salesman and storeman call you from their mobiles, text at anytime and jump in their cars and hand deliver if they have too, and we are pretty rural so that's worth a lot!

KOBELCO are making a Comeback and a Dealer ( Molson group) in Warrington so not to far away for you to have a try out , they are favourite for Zero Swings too also have a yard full at present to take a good look .

Also Whacker Nueson at Cautrac Bolton are worth a look , good vibes coming out from these Machines.

Also, was looking at the new Hanixs the other day- seemed well built machines at good value. similar build to the Takeuchis in that they were made up of steel rather than plastic casings, can only be a good thing in tree work.

Was on bbc4, called engineering giants, they basically stripped down a boeing 747 which had to be done as a service for british airways- quite interesting actually, the diggers were breaking an ex service one.
