Butchers Block

Recommended Posts

That's lovely James

Just been working on the chopping block again. Hope the pictures tell the story. The black marks are because the saw blade is a bit blunt. Something you get away with on softer woods but cross cutting maple shows this up. Hope it does not go too deep or else I will have a lot of planning to do.

That's what we use our 1942 butchers cleaver for.

I had to go look in the cupboard then, ours is just like that :thumbup1: My dad used to use it to cut the allotment pig up.

We have a recycled rubber wood chopping board about 1.5" thick, really nice looking thing and better to use than a nylon one, it doesn't skid across the worktop.

Just done the cleaning up and shaping. The reason for the chamfer is that the block is going to be mounted on a granite work top covering a hole where an old hob has been removed. The client did not want it to stick up too much and I did want to make it too thin as I thought it would be too unstable so the compromise was to make it a bit thicker than they want and the chamfer helps it look thinner than it is. No finish yet but probably going to use sunflower oil but may use Tung oil.
