What is this bowl made from?

Yes it's wood!

 

I was asked to cut out a high beech stump beside what at first glance I thought was granite ball covered in moss but realised it was growing from the base of the tree. Presuming it might be worth turning in the future I put it aside. The whole lump I removed weighed about 50kg when wet and I cut up into manageable pieces for turning. I would have probably never got around to turning it so gave it the father in-law (rather regret this now but he has done a lovely job with it)

 

I don't know if it's burr or some other kind of growth but definitely from a beech tree.

That is what burrs look like,

 

Sorry but cant agree. Maybe the picture does not show too well but in my years of woodworking not seen grain like this. This is like most burrs I have ever seen look burr bowls and mirrors | Craftform. Like normal grain but far more wavy with pips.

 

You may be right but if it is it's a very unusual example.
