Welligtonia is Sequoiadendron giganteum, Coast Redwood is Sequoia sempervirens. Size makes them seem similar but habit is different. Welligtonia tends to be pyramidal, Redwood more columnar. Comparosn with Thuja and Taxus is a good one interms of foliage but the Wellingtonia bark is a giveaway, fibrous and very, very thick. Soft to the touch

I was up close to a coast last week and was very surprised at the spongy bark on that.

Ok thanks guys, that sort of helps? With the names at least! We got six quite large ? In our wood. I'm pretty sure there wellys, but when I check my id book the foliage on ours seems to be somewhere between the two in the book. One of them is quite poorly and I'm thinking it may have to come down at some point.

I'm kinda hoping(on saw log terms) that its a sequoia but I'm not convinced. I'll get some pics of it tomorrow and post for an expert opinion. The bark is very thick though, never punched it though, maybe ill give that a go tomorrow too?
